Forums: Forum Home > Watercooler > Forum is hard to navigate as are user talk pages.

I am having trouble with the forum layout. It reminds me of the terrible usability of early BBS forums. Isn't there more modern wiki forum software that can be trivially implemented here?

User talk pages are another sticking point for me, I am finding myself jumping back and forth from user talk pages to follow topics that IMO are not personally explicit. Most are discussions are on a particular issue regarding some article so wouldn't it be something that needs to be addressed in a forum where the thread is kept in a single place? Am I missing some special function here that allows this type of navigation? These seem to be big issues that would needlessly deter someone from becoming a more active contributor.

Well, truth be told it doesn't get much use. After all, we also have talk pages and user talk pages. I'm not aware of any other wiki forum software that is available to us on Wikia, but I'm open to suggestions.
The forum replaced the Coffee Machine, which was just a simple page and forced people to change the dates manually.
User talk pages have the advantage that users are notified that they've been left a message, so tend to be more reliable. The disadvantage is as you've said, to reply you have to leave a message on the author's page so you don't get explicit threading. I would tend to leave a message for someone if it related to their edits, since it usually means I want to discuss something about what they personally are doing. Every article has a talk page associate with it, but it often gets overlooked sadly. --Wilfred (talk|contribs) 17:12, May 13, 2010 (UTC)
