The Double or Nothing is a sidestyle yo-yo mount that is the basis for many sidestyle yo-yo tricks. If the mount is thrown so the first loop goes round the thumb of the non-yo hand instead of the index finger it is referred to as a Houdini mount.

Double or Nothing is basically a Man on the Flying Trapeze with one extra wrap around both hands.

Getting into a Double or Nothing[]

Step1

Step 1: Start with a Breakaway and let the yo-yo swing over to your free hand.

Step2

Step 2: Put your free hand index finger in the path of the string and let the yo-yo swing around it. Compared to Man on the Flying Trapeze, the yo-yo is a lot farther away from your index finger.

Step3

Step 3: Let it continue upwards...

Step4

Step 4: ...and when it comes around, give it a little string by moving your hands closer together. The image shows how the segment between the two hands is not really taut here. This lets the yo-yo continue almost freely in a parabolic trajectory.

Step5

Step 5: When it reaches the other side, don't give it any more slack, and let it continue...

Step6

Step 6: ...around your throw hand index finger...

Step7

Step 7: ...back up again...

Step8

Step 8: ...and once more around your free hand index finger...

Step9

Step 9: ...landing on the string...

Step10

Step 10: ...in a small trapeze.

Triple or Nothing[]

Step1

Step 1: Triple or Nothing (3or0) is a variation, where the yo-yo is swung once more around the two index fingers. It starts at Step 7 of Double or nothing.

Step2

Step 2: Let the yo-yo once more round your free hand index finger

Step3

Step 3: When it rounds the finger, move your hands even closer together, resulting in a little slack in the three segements between the hands.

Step4

Step 4: Again over your throw hand index finger...

Step5

Step 5: ...around...

Step6

Step 6: ...and up...

Step7

Step 7: ...and landing...

Step8

Step 8: ...on the string. Wow. :-) Once you can do this, you can even try a Quadruple or Nothing or - with a small yo-yo - even a Quintuple or Nothing (by repeating steps 2 through 6).

Flyaway dismount[]

Now, how do you get out of this wrap? With a responsive yo-yo, a double/triple or nothing can be tossed up, releasing the string off both index fingers and the yo-yo will return. This is very similar to the flyaway dismount with a trapeze.

Step1

Step 1: Pull your hands apart.

Step2

Step 2: As this catapults the yo-yo up, drop the string loops from your two hands. The yo-yo starts to draw them out of your hands. Here goes the first loop from the free hand...

Step3

Step 3: ...and the second and third loop.

Step4

Step 4: See how the yo-yo...

Step5

Step 5: ... eats up the string...

Step6

Step 6: ...and returns. Catch from below

Windmill Dismount[]

Another dismount that can be done with the double/triple or nothing is the windmill. The windmill dismount will leave you in a trapeze.

Step1

Step 1: Shown here for a 3or0, the same method applies for 2or0. Drop the loop(s) from...

Step2

Step 2: ... your throw hand index finger.

Step3

Step 3: From a 3or0 you should now have the string coming from your throw hand going 1 3/4 times (only 3/4 for 2or0) aroud your free hand index finger, then down around the axle, up around the index finger again, and back to the yo-yo axle.

Step4

Step 4: Now pick up some swing...

Step5

Step 5: ...and swing the yo-yo around...

Step6

Step 6: ...your free hand index finger...

Step7

Step 7: ...

Step8

Step 8: ...

Step9

Step 9: ...one more round...

Step10

Step 10: ...

Step11

Step 11: coming down.

Step12

Step 12: By now the windinds around your index finger are gone and the yo-yo swings...

Step13

Step 13: ...down...

Step14

Step 14: ...into a Trapeze.

Absolute Zero Dismount[]

Step1

Step 1: This dismount is the beginning for the yo-yo trick Absolute Zero. It should be done with an unresponsive yo-yo. This one works nicely for Double or Nothing, but is not recommended for Triple or Nothing.

Toss up the yo-yo while dropping the first loop around your free hand index finger.

Step2

Step 2: Note, that the loop around the throw hand index finger stays put. This is a bit confusing in this picture. The yo-yo flies up...

Step3

Step 3: ...and while you pull the string taut by bringing your hands further apart...

Step4

Step 4: ...you land it on the front string...

Step5

Step 5: ...in a Man on the Flying Trapeze and his Brother. Toss up again.

Step6

Step 6: Drop the loop from your throw hand finger.

Step7

Step 7: Bring your hand further apart...

Step8

Step 8: ...and land in Trapeze.
